Australian-born magnate urges US voters to go and see 2016: Obama's America 'and decide for self what future they want'

Rupert Murdoch has urged all American voters to go and see an anti-Barack Obama documentary which has proven a surprise box-office hit.

2016: Obama's America, which suggests the US president will work to reduce his country's influence on world affairs if he is re-elected this winter, has made more than $10.5m (£6.6m) in receipts in seven weeks of release and is gathering momentum. It entered the US box-office top 10 at the weekend in eighth place.

"Just saw 2016. Truly scary if no answer. Every voter should see and decide for self what future they want for America," tweeted Murdoch, who has been a regular user of the microblogging service since the beginning of the year. The Australian-born News Corporation founder, who resigned as a director of News International last month in the wake of the News of the World hacking scandal, is a US citizen and maintains a large business empire in the States including the film studio 20th Century Fox and the TV station Fox News.

2016: Obama's America is directed by conservative author and commentator Dinesh D'Souza, an Indian American who argues that the president's political instincts are anti-American â€" allegedly due to the influence of his purportedly anti-colonialist Kenyan father Barack Obama Sr. It warns that a second term for the Democratic candidate in November's presidential election could change the country for good and ends with the statement: "The future is in your hands."

Murdoch later continued to show his political leanings with a post praising last night's speech by Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan at the party's national convention in Tampa Florida. "Utterly brilliant speech by Paul Ryan," he tweeted. "Leaders like him needed in many countries today."
