The Twilight star signs up for Snow White and the Huntsman follow-up, without director Rupert Sanders
Twilight star Kristen Stewart will be returning to the lead role in a sequel to this year's fantasy fable Snow White and the Huntsman, reports Radar. Meanwhile, the film's British director, Rupert Sanders, with whom the US actor had a highly publicised affair, has not been asked back.
Radar's story contradicts earlier suggestions that Stewart would be asked to step aside for the follow-up, due to concerns over her popularity with fans following reports that she cheated on her boyfriend, Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson, with the married Sanders. The Hollywood Reporter said in August that studio Universal had opted for a sequel about Chris Hemsworth's Huntsman in the wake of the scandal. Radar demurs, reporting that a straight follow-up â" as opposed to a spin-off â" is being planned.
"The script has already been written and production will begin late next year," a source told the site. "However, Rupert Sanders definitely won't be a part of the project. Rupert didn't want to be a part of it to begin with because he is desperately still trying to save his marriage. The search is still on for a new director."
Snow White and the Huntsman drew middling reviews on its release in June but took an impressive $394m at the global box office, sparking talk of a sequel. The final film in the Twilight series debuted with the highest opening of the series so far, an impressive $340.9m (£214m) worldwide, at the weekend. Breaking Dawn â" Part 2's success may have helped convince Hollywood that Stewart is not suffering from a lack of popularity.
