The Soul of Flies – review

The Soul of Flies â€" review

This empty, whimsical Spanish film is a familiar tale in the magical realism vein of two contrasted brothers brought together for the first time to make a cross-country journey across a deserted plain to attend the funeral of a long absent father. They travel on foot, by car and motorcycle, meeting a succession of unmemorable eccentrics. Along the way the director pays homage to the three great 20th century Bs â€" Buñuel, Beckett and Bergman â€" incurring debts that by the end of the movie blow across the parched land like abandoned IOUs.
