This empty, whimsical Spanish film is a familiar tale in the magical realism vein of two contrasted brothers brought together for the first time to make a cross-country journey across a deserted plain to attend the funeral of a long absent father. They travel on foot, by car and motorcycle, meeting a succession of unmemorable eccentrics. Along the way the director pays homage to the three great 20th century Bs â" Buñuel, Beckett and Bergman â" incurring debts that by the end of the movie blow across the parched land like abandoned IOUs.
