The AM! frontwoman talks fashion, living openly as a transsexual on new episode of 'House Of Style.'

Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace made headlines earlier this year when she came out as transgender and began living life as a woman ... with her wife and young daughter by her side.
When she first broke the news to Rolling Stone, she said she didn't want to be considered a hero or an icon; in fact, her biggest hopes were that "people will understand ... and be fairly kind." And she echoed those same sentiments in her first on-camera interview — with MTV News — telling us that her biggest goal was to live life on her terms.
"My life improves every single day. I try to make a step every single day, no matter how big or how small," she said. "It feels like I'm in control of my life, and I'm in control of my person, and that's empowering. Saying to someone 'I'm a transsexual' is the most empowering thing I've ever felt in my whole life."
Since coming out back in May, she's hit the road with Against Me! and begun work on the band's next album, reportedly called Transgender Dysphoria Blues. She's also continued to undergo hormone therapy and settled in to her new life with her family in St. Augustine, Florida ... a life MTV's House of Style was invited to document for their latest episode.
Laura Jane welcomed "House" co-host Joan Smalls to her family's home, which was already done up for Christmas and came complete with pink flamingos on the lawn (very Florida). She showed off the closet she shares with her wife, Heather — "I'm probably one of the luckiest transsexuals in the world; I have the same-sized shoe as my wife, so I can steal any of her shoes," she laughed — talked about her changing fashion sense and beauty regiment and discussed the perils of epilator use.
"It pulls the hair out," she winced. "I've been tattooed all over my body, nothing is more painful than this."
And though her story was one of the biggest of the year, and her day job growling for AM! certainly isn't ordinary, what strikes us the most about Laura Jane Grace's "House Of Style" segment is how surprisingly normal her everyday life really is. With a closet full of leathers, her wife and adorable daughter filling her home with laughter, and a seriously formidable collection of shoes, she's begun the next chapter of her story ... and we're grateful for the opportunity to document it.
