Ricky Gervais in talks for Muppets sequel

Comedian tipped to star alongside Kermit, Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear in follow-up to 2011 Muppets film

Ricky Gervais is in talks to take the lead role in the forthcoming Muppets sequel, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

While his role is being kept under wraps, it is said to be on a par with the one played by Jason Segel in last year's The Muppets. The next outing for Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear et al will be set in Europe. It will be Gervais's first leading film role since 2009's The Invention of Lying and is not his first time hanging out with The Muppets â€" he made a cameo appearance in the last outing that ended up on the cutting room floor.

The Muppets sequel will once again be directed by James Bobin, with Nicholas Stoller also returning as screenwriter. Segel, who co-wrote and starred in the earlier film, is expected to make a cameo this time around. Ty Burrell of US TV show Modern Family is to play a lazy Interpol inspector, a role once earmarked for Christoph Waltz.

The last Muppets movie made more than $150m (£92m) at the worldwide box office and was highly acclaimed by critics. It successful reunited Jim Henson's enduring creations on the big screen for the first time since 1999's The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland.

It has previously been reported that The Muppets sequel will be shot in and around London and at Pinewood Studios from late January until April 2013.
